The promotion of young talent has been one of the founding principles of the FES. The first scholarships were awarded to particularly talented young individuals from a working class milieu who were taking an active part in the young democracy of the Weimar Republic.
For the FES therefore, it is not only the applicants' academic achievement but also their social and political involvement and their personal attitudes that play an important part in the selection process.
The FES supports students from public or state-approved universities and from polytechnical colleges. It supports all academic subjects and postgraduate programmes. It is also possible for non-German students to apply for the scholarship programme. They, however, need to study in Germany at the time of application.
In order to find out more about the application process and who to contact please visit the FES Scholarship Department website.
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Myanmar regularly offers full-time internships (40 working hours) to German and Myanmar university master’s-level students. Internships generally cover a period of at least three months, preferably longer. Please submit your application as far in advance as possible. The time-frames for internships can be discussed during the application procedure.
Applicants with the following academic backgrounds are especially suited for an internship at FES Myanmar:
Political Science, Economics, Asian Studies, International Relations, Sociology or related fields.
Internships with FES in Myanmar consist of assisting in office work, but we make a strong effort to personalize the content of the internship and to closely match the interests of our interns with an involvement in current FES project lines.
Tasks include, but are not limited to: logistics surrounding conferences and workshops, writing of conference reports, research, documentation, office administration, support of experts and delegations, and personal assignments by the country director. Interns may also have the opportunity to do research on their final university dissertation during their internship as long as the research topic is deemed useful for the work of FES in Myanmar. Each intern will carry out his or her own project in consultation with the office during the internship: this can be, for example, a small research project or the organisation of a self-initiated event — the interns’ own project ideas are always welcome.
During their stay, interns will also learn about the wide range of issues and topics covered by FES in Myanmar and can deepen their understanding of FES’s work in Myanmar by attending many interesting workshops and conferences.
Applicants need to apply for a business visa. FES will provide interns with all the necessary documents such as invitation letters. If any assistance is needed during the application process, our office will gladly help you out.
From a period of four weeks onwards, a taxable allowance of 450.00 euros per month will be paid for full-time internships. Further expenses such as flight costs, visa fees, medical examinations, etc. are not covered by FES. These costs as well as the costs of foreign health, liability and accident insurance must be borne by the interns themselves.
Further funding may possibly be granted by the following institutions:
